ancillary cellars 2018 chardonnay – sangiacomo vineyard

our 2018 ancillary chardonnay comes from the sangiacomo green acres vineyard’s “heritage block,” which was planted in 1969 with the old wente clone on st. george rootstock. while the entire vineyard benefits from the cooling influence of the petaluma gap, the “heritage block” is rooted in an ancient footprint of copeland creek, providing alluvial soils with tracks of gravel that prove exceptional for growing premium chardonnay and allowing us to craft wines with nuanced depth. this vineyard is one of the most sought-after chardonnay vineyards in california, it shows distinctive character and intensity in the grapes which is from the unusual small berry size which increases the skin to juice ratio.

Opening with notes of lemon pie and tropical fruit with hints of dried mint that complement the ripe citrus skin notes found throughout this wine. Plush on the mid palate, grapefruit flavors intermingle with a juicy creamy texture creating a full-bodied Chardonnay that is balanced with bright natural acidity with a touch saline from the moderating influence found in wines from the Petaluma Gap. It’s finish is decadent and flamboyant - a loaded wine with power and grace. Enjoy now through 2026.
