ancillary cellars 2017 chardonnay – sangiacomo vineyard

our 2017 ancillary chardonnay comes from the sangiacomo green acres vineyard’s “heritage block,” which was planted in 1969 with the old wente clone on st. george rootstock. while the entire vineyard benefits from the cooling influence of the petaluma gap, the “heritage block” is rooted in an ancient footprint of copeland creek, providing alluvial soils with tracks of gravel that prove exceptional for growing premium chardonnay and allowing us to craft wines with nuanced depth. this vineyard is one of the most sought-after chardonnay vineyards in california, it shows distinctive character and intensity in the grapes which is from the unusual small berry size which increases the skin to juice ratio.

opening with notes of rich pear tart and key lime pie, while white lily and hazelnut aromas playfully complement the ripe citrus notes found throughout this wine. slightly plush on the mid palate, grapefruit flavors intermingle with a juicy creamy texture creating a full-bodied chardonnay that is balanced with bright natural acidity. decadent with an oily mouth feel, the wente clone does not disappoint – loading this wine with power and grace, with a more crisp finish than our el diablo vineyard. enjoy now through 2024.
